1878, the year King Oscar II inaugurated the Great Hall of the Royal Swedish But Nybrokajen 11 was more than just a concert hall. The building also housed the Royal Academy of Music, which until the 60s was familiarly known as Ackis, that is to say, the institution which offered the most advanced music education in the country. Here such world stars as Birgit Nilsson, Jussi Björling and Sixten Ehrling were formed. In other words, there is a rich tradition built into the foundations of Nybrokajen 11. After extensive restoration work the building was reopened in March, 1998 - this time by King Carl Gustaf. And the sounding history continues ... |
